Kornegay takes WCMA Championship

Kevin Kornegay (67-72-75-214) of Mount Olive became the second Wayne County Men's Amateur champion Sunday, September 10 when he held off the field at Lane Tree Golf Club during the final round action of the 54-hole event.

Kornegay led the Open Division of the event at all three of the 18-hole breaks.

Kornegay carded a three-over 75 during the final round action to take the coveted silver cup home with him.

He said although he took a bogey on the ninth hole (No. 18) of the tournament, that was the save that earned him the championship.

Kornegay hit an iron to the right off the tee, on what is hole No. 18 on the course, as the field went off on the back nine. His approach found the deep bunker in front of the green, and with the pin tucked in the back right corner, Kornegay had a tough up-and-down from there.

His first attempt was inches away from being a spectacular shot, but inches is all it takes in golf. The ball rolled back into the bunker and Kornegay was looking double bogey straight in the eyes.

However, the ensuing second attempt out of the hazard rolled just past the hole and Kornegay made the right-to-left breaking 10-footer for bogey.

"That putt was the championship," he said.

The Amateur tournament committee is again proud to announce the return of title sponsor Andy’s Cheesesteaks and Cheeseburgers, and associate sponsor Webpickle.
