Wooles fires 2001 tournament-low 67 to take
Open Championship by one stroke over Garris
|
Mike Wooles fired a tournament-low 67 in the final round of the 2001 WCMA to take the 54-hole event by one stroke over Jeff Garris. Wooles came into final round, which was held at Southern Wayne Country Club, six strokes behind two-day leader Tony Hamm, who carded a disappointing 78 on Sunday.
The tournament lead went back-and-forth during the final nine between Wooles and Garris, who was in the group just behind Wooles. And, as if the tournament needed a little more excitement, the Open Championship came right down to the final hole.
Wooles birdied the No. 8 (17th hole of the day) par 5 and took par on his final hole of the tournament to take a one stroke lead over Garris. Garris' birdie putt lipped out on the par 5, and he had to birdie the final to force a playoff. However, Garris' birdie attempt on the 54th hole would not fall.

Howard Tyndall carded the second best round of the tournament, a 68, during the final round of the event to take the Senior Division Championship. Tyndall trailed by two strokes following the opening round at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course, but made up some ground on day two at Walnut Creek to take a one-stroke advantage over James Ratliff into Sunday's final.
Bud King's final round 70 could only get him as close as four strokes to Tyndall. Frankie Watson also carded a one-under 70, but his 79 the day before was too much for him to recover from.
After carding a pair of 72s in the first two rounds, Harvey Reinhardt looked to be on his way to taking the Super Senior Division Championship. However, he struggled the final round, carding the highest round in the division for the day, an 81. Joe McLamb, who trailed Reinhardt by just one stroke going into the final round, kept his cool and fired a three-over 74 to take the championship by four strokes over Jere Hilburn, who also shot 74.
