Tournament Champions - 2004...

Daughtry comes from four strokes back to take
2004 WCMA Open title, becomes first to repeat in tourney's history

June 6 has long been a day set aside to remember D-Day and the brave men lost at Normandy. On June 6, 2004, a WCMA D-Day stands for something else, Daughtry Day. After winning the 2004 WCMA championship, Randy Daughtry became the first WCMA competitor to repeat as champion.

The tournament came down to the final hole of play. Daughtry, who was in the next to last group, was just off the green in two on his final hole of play. At that moment, he was tied with Mike Rackley and Sam Strawn, both in the final group, at one-over for the tournament. Daughtry's chip ran past the cup, leaving him about eight feet coming back for par. His patience paid off as he took his time looking over the putt while a crowd of his fellow competitors and spectators watched from the brick fence that surrounds the No. 9, Par 4 at Lane Tree Golf Club. As he addressed the ball for the putt, the crowd hushed. Just after his stroke of the ball started it rolling, the crowd began cheering and ruptured into a roar as the ball dropped into the cup. With Daughtry now in the clubhouse, his fate was left into the hands of his co-leaders, Rackley and Strawn.

Rackley's approach was left of the green and little short and Strawn found himself short and right, with a greenside bunker between him and the flag. Both golfers found the green, but neither could find the cup on the ensuing putts that followed. The bogies they took on the final hole of the tournament handed Daughtry the championship.
