Burke holds on to take WCMA Championship
Scott Woodard and Ryan Campbell both had opportunities to close the small gap between themselves and 36-hole leader Jonathan Burke on the final day of the 2009 WCMA Tournament. But neither could close the deal, while Burke managed to scramble himself out of trouble when he needed to.
Woodard missed an opportunity to put some heat on Burke when he had a 15-footer for eagle on the par 5, 15th. Woodard would three-putt the hole. Burke stayed off Campbell two holes later. Campbell put his drive dead center of the par 5, 17th fairway, while Burke was in the edge of the left-side woods and had to punch out. Burke then placed his third shot about 20 feet above the pin from about 225 yards. Campbell needed to put his ball in position for an eagle putt to put any pressure on Burke, but he found the left-side bunker instead. Burke sealed the championship when he drained the 20-footer for birdie.
Balltzglier takes Senior Division on sudden death playoff
Perry Balltzglier and Mario Contreras both went into the final round of the Senior Division Championship one back of 36-hole leader Glen Campbell, and managed to end up tied at the end of regulation play of the 56-hole event. The two golfers went into a sudden death playoff, playing the par 4, 18th again when Balltzglier took the tournament on a par as Contreras bogeyed.
Tyndall goes wire-to-wire
Howard Tyndall started the Super Senior Division of the WCMA Championship with a two-stroke lead over the field and never looked back as he to the event wire-to-wire and won by three shots. Tyndall carded a 75 and held off Chuck Kimble as he could only match Tyndalls round with a 75 of his own.
